Gender Inclusive Housing

Gender Inclusive Housing allows students to be assigned a room without regard to sex assigned at birth or gender identity. Students who request Gender Inclusive Housing will be assigned with others making that same request. Because the room assignment is gender-blind, students may be matched with someone of the same or different gender identity or sex assigned at birth. Any room type is available for Gender Inclusive Housing. In addition, if a student has a specific roommate request who is a student of a different gender identity or sex assigned at birth, that request may be accommodated provided the request is mutual.

Gender Inclusive Eligibility

Students of any gender identity or sex assigned at birth are eligible to participate in Gender Inclusive Housing. Both first-year students and returning students are eligible. Students must be 18 years old in order to participate. Students who are under 18 years old may participate with written permission from a parent or guardian.

To sign up for Gender Inclusive Housing, all individuals or group members must select “Yes” on the Gender Inclusive Housing page of the housing application or housing preferences request form at MyHomeAtPenn. First-year students will be contacted by the Housing Assignments Office to discuss this option and the availability of space.

For both first-year and returning students, once you select Gender Inclusive Housing, that selection remains active from year to year, unless you request a change by contacting the Housing Assignments Office at living@upenn.edu. Selecting Gender Inclusive Housing does not change your sex assigned at birth in the Student Registration System.

Gender Inclusive Housing Policy for First-Year Students

First-year students who sign up for Gender Inclusive Housing will be assigned housing without regard to the sex assigned at birth or gender identity of roommates. If no vacancies exist in Gender Inclusive Housing, you will be assigned housing according to your sex assigned at birth in the Student Registration System.

Gender Inclusive Housing Policy for Returning Students

Since returning undergraduates apply for Room Selection in a roommate group, all roommates in the group must sign up for Gender Inclusive Housing in order to be assigned to the same room. The housing system will not allow students of different sexes assigned at birth to be assigned to the same room unless all students in the group are participating in Gender Inclusive Housing.

During the open selection phases of Return to House and Move to Another House, students who are participating in Gender Inclusive Housing may only select beds in completely vacant rooms or in partially occupied rooms with other students who are participating in Gender Inclusive Housing.

Vacancies in Gender Inclusive Housing

If a vacancy occurs in a Gender Inclusive Housing room, the remaining roommates may request to have a specific student fill the vacancy. The request must be made in writing to the Housing Assignments Office at living@upenn.edu within 24 hours of the vacancy occurring.

If a specific roommate is not requested to fill the vacancy, the Housing Assignments Office reserves the right to fill the empty bed:

  1. The Housing Assignments Office will place another student who has requested Gender Inclusive Housing in the open bed.
  2. If a new roommate cannot be identified, the Housing Assignments Office may require the remaining residents to relocate to another room. A matching room type is not guaranteed. For example, if three students select a triple apartment, and one student cancels their housing assignment, the remaining two students may be relocated to a double apartment or to a quad apartment with two vacancies.
